Loudspeaker Engineering And Sound Systems
Resisting rewriting history of JBL.
Editorial By J. Martins
For this speaker-focused issue of audioXpress we
have explored several fascinating trends in modern speaker design that are
becoming far more recognized. Thomas Perazella shares his explorations and
impressions to enhance the listening experience with Edgar Choueiri's BACCH
spatial-audio technology and suite of processing tools. The BACCH algorithms,
software, SDKs, and related IP are available for licensing from BACCH Labs,
while the hardware processors and software are commercialized by Theoretica
Applied Physics, the company founded by Edgar Choueiri. What is fascinating is
that while Thomas Perazella's interest was triggered by crosstalk cancellation,
the exploration of the BACCH software quickly allowed him to understand the
broad benefits of enhancing loudspeaker-based spatial imaging. Not surprisingly,
Edgar Choueiri summarizes his approach as "spatial audio" and the aim of its
processing tools as to allow the listener "to experience spatially accurate 3D
sound from a pair of stereo loudspeakers." And from the realm of "stereophonic
sound," we progress toward the concepts of "3D sound" and "Spatial Audio" even
with two speakers as the source.

8 Virtualization Of Audio Systems Development
Business And Technological Benefits
By Alfred J. Svobodnik
Engineering simulation is not just a technical tool but
a business strategy for audio system development.
This article highlights the key business advantages that
can serve as objectives for an engineering simulation
infrastructure initiative, and expands with examples
from modern audio systems, addressing the electrical,
mechanical, and software interactions from concept
through validation.
You Can DIY!
16 High-End Active Acceleration Controlled Loudspeaker
Part 1—Choosing The Design
By Reinhold Lutz
Are High-End and DIY contradictory terms? This article
demonstrates how to design and realize an active
loudspeaker—where each driver is powered by its
dedicated power amplifier—with acceleration control
and with Doppler compensation. The detailed design and
realization should be approachable by the DIY community.
34 The PR-100
A Two-Way Loudspeaker With A Passive Radiator
By George Ntanavaras
This article describes the design, measurement,
simulation, and final tuning of the PR-100, a medium-sized
two-way stand-mounted loudspeaker using a
passive radiator for extended bass.

24 Living With BACCH
By Thomas Perazella
Thomas Perazella explores Edgar Choueiri's BACCH
technology. Drawing on technical research, visits to
Princeton's 3D Audio and Applied Acoustics Laboratory,
extensive listening sessions, and his own system
installation, the article offers an engaging firsthand
account of the results, with detailed listening
impressions across a wide range of music.

44 Mark Gander And The Engineering Of JBL's Professional
Era
Part 1—Education And The First Years
By Scott Leslie
As JBL celebrates 80 years, this interview with Mark Gander,
JBL's former Director of Technology and resident historian,
details a remarkable career and provides a fascinating insight
into the birth of the modern professional audio industry in a
three-part article.

54 Acoustical Design For Speech Privacy
By Richard Honeycutt
Speech privacy is one of those acoustical objectives that only
becomes apparent when it is absent. It is closely associated
with Sound Transmission Class (STC), the standard metric
used to rate how effectively a partition attenuates airborne
sound between adjacent spaces.
