AXPONA 2026 Listening Notes, Gear Highlights, And New Gear Show Report
The audiophile faithful descended once again on Schaumburg, IL, April 10th through 12th, for North America's largest gathering of high-end designers, manufacturers, and enthusiasts of all levels and backgrounds. AXPONA 2026 is now officially in the books as the largest to-date, with Event Director Liz Smith reporting 12,546 attendees – a 15% jump over 2025. Gen Z, attendance in particular was up 52% - a successfully targeted demographic that signals a tremendous show of enthusiasm and support from our ever-growing community! With 750+ international brands / designers, retailers, and exhibitors and 235 dedicated listening rooms distributed over 12 floors of the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center, this year's AXPONA 2026 high-end audiophile show provided ample opportunity to experience and celebrate some of the finest home audio hi-fi designs in the world. Though the above numbers for this 15th annual audiophile event are impressive, I am continually inspired by the welcoming, tight-knit community that it represents. Everyone has a place at the table, and everyone comes away with a broader awareness and appreciation for the high art of presenting recorded music (and perhaps a few lighter wallets, too!). As the largest gathering of high-end audio enthusiasts in North America, AXPONA indeed serves as a key community builder for the industry, especially in the role of education. With an expanded palette of fifteen seminars and twenty masterclasses / workshops conveniently scheduled throughout the weekend, this year's audiophile show was postured as a unique and comprehensive resource for consumer awareness and inspiration. For the second year, the Car Audio Showcase, co-sponsored by the International Auto Sound Challenge Association (IASCA), joined in the AXPONA experience, offering attendees a different perspective on high-end audio applications and enjoyment.
The Friday and Saturday evening concerts welcomed rising jazz pianist, Caelan Cardello, accompanied by Chicago first-call artists, Dana Hall (Drs), and Clark Sommers (Dbl Bass), and internationally renowned singer-songwriter, Amber Rubarth, to packed and energetic crowds in the Schaumburg East ballroom. The tradition of informal evening gatherings in select listening rooms throughout also added to the festivity and charming embrace of exceptional listening among new and old friends. Indeed, and by all accounts, AXPONA has become much more than a trade show. Rather, it is a marvelous gathering of diverse and engaged learners who are motivated by their collective passion for the art of recorded music, always eager to share and, above all, always eager to listen!
As a professional musician & university professor, 99% of my weekends are spoken for, thus the luxury of traveling to an audio conference for even a day is very difficult. Consequently, I've thus far been unable to jet off to HIGH END Munich / Vienna, and rarely to Capital Audiofest, the Florida International Audio Expo, Southwest Audio Fest, or Pacific Audiofest due to rehearsal / performance commitments. However, a consequence of proximity and blessings from the calendar gods, I've thankfully been able to carve out the annual weekend road trip to Chicago. A 6.5-hour drive from our home in the cornfields of Missouri, and I'm re-energized and inspired by friends and audio artisans the world over.
The caveat to my visit this year was that I only had two days to peruse (Friday and Saturday), as it was necessary to travel back early Sunday for an evening rehearsal. With twelve floors of 200+ listening rooms, the Ear Gear Experience, Expo Hall, seminars, and concerts, a personal master schedule was essential to navigate the weekend (visiting / meeting friends, impromptu gatherings, etc., I ended up failing miserably at this). Needless to say, I did not have the opportunity to enjoy what I'm certain were many fine rooms, for which I extend my apologies. In any case, here are those who won over my ears at this year's AXPONA in both sound and design, beginning with what I considered my top five Enjoy the Music.com Best Of AXPONA 2026 Blue Note Award . I will also note a few additional systems that I feel deserve special recognition for generating exceptional music.
Club Lounge Magico And
Pilium
Though a complete room/pricing list was unavailable, Jeff Fritz, Magico Brand Ambassador, informed me that the S7 will run approx. $135k to $150k per pair (shipments to begin third quarter of this year). Sources, power plant, and supporting pieces for the system consisted of Pilium amplification, Pilium and CH Precision preamplification, DCS DAC, Antipodes streamer, Telos Audio Design conditioning, VYDA cabling, and Magico MRack equipment and amp stands.
IMHO, exclusivity into the elite Million+ club isn't so much the objective of show systems at this level as much as it is their responsibility to represent the present apex of our art, a beacon of inspiration, motivating trickle-down enthusiasm throughout the industry, regardless of brand/design. Ultimately, it is about the music, which in this experience was presented holographically on a stage so lifelike that one could practically touch the shoulder of the concertmaster.
With grateful appreciation to Magico Founder and CEO Alon Wolf, Vice President of Global Sales / Marketing Peter Mackay, and the many others who made this opportunity possible for what may have been for many attendees their only window to enjoy recorded musical sound as generated by this incredible gathering of audio instruments. An AXPONA Enjoy the Music.com Best Of AXPONA 2026 Blue Note Award recipient.
