SVS' SB-5000 R|Evolution Will Not Be Televised — It
Will Be Felt!
If Santa missed the mark on giving you the gift of deep, room-shaking bass this year, meet the SVS 5000 R|Evolution SB-5000 sealed subwoofer — the sub that transforms your music listening experience (it's not only for movie explosions). Within this review, Enjoy the Music.com tests the SVS SB-5000 active subwoofer with 2000 Watts from a real-world stereo perspective, showing how a high-performance subwoofer can do more than boost LFE at 80Hz: it fills the gap where your speakers naturally roll off, adds authoritative low-end detail, and restores the rhythm, weight, and physical deep bass connection to your favorite tracks that have been missing… until now. The SVS subwoofer was tested alongside my reference Vapor Audio Cirrus loudspeakers and go-to Arte Forma amplifier, aiming for a musical, real-world setup. I tried the preamplifier output so the SVS could receive a full stereo analog feed and make the most of its 295 Hz Analog Devices DSP and the SVS app's fine-tuning. Using an SPL meter at my listening seat, I carefully calibrated levels until the bass felt natural and integrated with my main pair of (front) stereo loudspeakers. In the end, I settled on running my Yaqin MS-12B as a pass-through and the primary volume control, which gave the system the tonal balance and control I wanted.
The Setup
SVS' app allows you to set up to six PEQ points between 20Hz and 200Hz, with adjustable Q factors ranging from 0.2 to 10, making it easier to fine-tune specific frequencies. This was especially useful with my vinyl setup and my new AT VM540ML cartridge, which excels at digging deep into the bass. After a few hours of testing with tone signals, I achieved a fairly flat room response. I'm curious to see how the automatic tuning feature, which uses your phone's microphone, performs once it's available in a future app update. This feature wasn't live at the time of my review.
Another feature many will appreciate, especially for home theater use, is the high-quality AC line conditioning built into the amplifier. This provides more flexibility in placing your subwoofer, eliminating the need for a dedicated line conditioner, which is often crucial given the subwoofer's sensitivity and the range of frequencies it covers.
Initial Impressions You can't easily identify these elements just by listening to sweeps or testing a flat response curve in a room. Instead, they require more detailed listening tests. Transient response is also important, as it matches the speed of the drivers in your speakers to produce that seamless, full-range sound that audiophiles seek.
I read somewhere that a good 2.1 setup shouldn't sound like two speakers and a sub. Instead, it should make your speakers seem taller and deeper within the soundstage, anchored by the drum kit and piano to create a sense of space. I couldn't agree more, so this is what I will be listening for. In my space with my monitors, I made a few adjustments: a 24dB low-pass filter on the 15-inch sub set at 55Hz, a 6dB room gain compensation at 25Hz, and some tweaks to address room artifacts—a 1.2dB boost at 20Hz and a -6dB filter at 43Hz. I'll keep experimenting with different presets, but so far, this setup feels right.
The Music Many music lovers reading Enjoy the Music.com may appreciate how this track strikes a balance between musicality and an immersive experience. That's the kind of effect a good subwoofer like this can bring to a well-recorded track. We've all heard impressive musical reproduction, but to really feel like you're at a live show, you need a system that can move some air along with great speakers. SVS's SB-5000 R|Evolution active/DSP subwoofer truly showcases the advancements in digital amplifier technology, particularly in the amount of raw power it can deliver! With a dedicated 2000 Watt monoblock for each of the two voice coils, I appreciate that it can deliver plenty of bass without relying solely on volume. The playback remains solid at reference levels, and even when the SPL (volume level) is normalized to around 65dB at my listening spot, the subwoofer doesn't sound boomy or loose. It blends smoothly with the mix, even alongside high-end super monitors.
More Music Maestro Honestly, I wish I could have experimented with this live. During this track, you hear the sub covering both the audible and tactile parts of the kick drum and tom, keeping the driving bassline alive and floating in the room, while also covering some of the bass range of the organ that slips into the mix. I probably listened to this track about 15 times while writing the review, and out of all the times I've heard it, those 15 were my favorites.
Finch's Murder By Death album is truly unique, created by a distinctive band. I was lucky enough to see their show in St. Louis during their farewell tour earlier this year, and 'Finch' showcases the musical talents of this somewhat obscure group. It's an instrumental album featuring Murder by Death, along with some complex arrangements designed as a soundtrack for the sci-fi book of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer, though I haven't read it yet, I probably should. The recording quality is outstanding, and the vinyl release boasts incredible dynamics, which really push a sub like the SVS SB-5000 R|Evolution, but somehow still nowhere near its limits. The double bass, in particular, sounds enormous in the mix when played through the SVS SB-5000 R|Evolution active subwoofer. Even though I've listened to this album dozens of times on a wide variety of loudspeakers and headphones, I still discover new details, such as the buzz of a vibrating open string or a high fret on the bass, which is one of the hardest sounds to reproduce musically! My system, with the SVS sub integrated, makes it effortless. Their 15-inch dual voice-coil subwoofer driver handles the bottom octaves like a champ! I feel like Hans Zimmer better watch out! While this isn't a typical home theater setup, it's the closest I prefer at this time. ImmersivephilesTM are, perhaps, still a few years away. The crescendos inspired by the book reach theatrical levels in both sound and dynamics, and I love it. Maybe someday I'll get back into home theater, but don't tell my wife.
Conclusion Maybe a few of the oldest of stereo audio 'phile enthusiasts might overlook the added value and stickiness of features that allow precision tinkering. The very useful modern SVS app, along with timely software updates and features added over time, aims to provide this excellent added value. If you notice something within a mix or a specific bass mode in your room, you can save your configuration and experiment with different profiles. How very handy is that!?! Whether you want to tune the system for different types of music or movies, the app makes it straightforward.
Personally, and we know this is true with some Enjoy the Music.com readers too, it is enjoyable to fine-tune one's high-end home audio/video setup for different listening experiences. The app's interface is extremely intuitive, and I've spent quite a bit of time adjusting the phase, for instance, to get the best integration between the SVS SB-5000 R|Evolution active subwoofer and main front loudspeakers. Is it 3 degrees? Or 5? You can easily create profiles tailored for genres like rock or acoustic music. Sometimes, technology can seem superfluous or almost like bloatware. But in this case, the handy modern app controlling their SVS SB-5000 R|Evolution active subwoofer adds significant value. It complements the subwoofer's capabilities and enhances the overall experience. I was very excited to see the press release for this model, something I haven't felt in a while. Now, within my home audio sound system, the SVS SB-5000 R|Evolution active subwoofer, as reviewed here on Enjoy the Music.com, greatly exceeded my high expectations and the hype behind them! Very highly recommended.
