Avantgarde Acoustic Opus 1 Debut At
FIAE 2026 — American Sound Distribution By Angie Lisi
Before I could even enter Angie Lisi's American Sound Distribution exhibit room, she saw me coming and had a pair of headphones in her hand, insisting that they go onto my head for a listen. Immediately, I recognized the headamp by Synthesis, a company that was first reported in America by Enjoy the Music.com while reporting on the Top Audio & Video show decades ago. Letting Angie know we're not head-fi specialists, she said that there's a new preamplifier with headamp version, which is perfect for those of us who love enjoying our music (out loud) with our family and good friends. Of course, isolationists and headphone aficionados will also love listening to the benefits of a high-end audio 300B tube amp. Sounded really great!
Walking into their exhibit room, it opened with a confident visual statement: the Avantgarde Acoustic Opus 1 hornspeakers stood as elegant mid-towers, their sculptural forms immediately drawing attention. Angie Lisi and American Sound Distribution arranged the horn loudspeakers with meticulous spacing and tasteful lighting, creating an inviting listening environment. The price point of $18,000 was noted discreetly, while the room's design emphasized musicality over salesmanship.
Sound arrived with startling immediacy, thanks to the Opus 1's incredible 103dB/W/m sensitivity with a dedicated 250-Watt bass amplifier and passive hornspeaker, delivering dynamics that filled the space without even a hint of strain. Air Tight vacuum tube electronics are known to provide a slightly warm, harmonically- natural midrange that complements natural speed and clarity. The result was a rare combination of authority and refinement that made both delicate passages and full-band crescendos equally compelling.
For decades and the made in Japan, Air Tight's handmade vacuum tube amplifiers and associated analog components employ classic valve topologies with modern, precision craftsmanship to deliver sound prized by audiophiles. Their models range from reference El34-based integrateds like the relaunched ATM-1e to large flagship monoblocks and specialty 211 / 300B designs. Supreme Analog, Analog Relax, and Rethm loudspeakers were also showcased within the room, each contributing distinct sonic perspectives to the presentation. Together, they helped create a curated narrative about how different high-end audio approaches can coexist and inform one another. Angie's music selection was clearly chosen to highlight strengths and fun: intimate vocal jazz and acoustic recordings to modern fan favorites. It is always interesting to hear show attendees' comments within/as they leave an exhibit room. My wife/Muse Heather and I commented how others were very impressed with the music, as it sounded both immediate and natural with emotional impact.
Angie and her team handled inquiries with knowledgeable, unhurried explanations that reinforced the room's professional tone. Her passion is obvious, and that's one of the many reasons we love her. The atmosphere balanced commerce and connoisseurship, making it easy for visitors to appreciate both the gear and the music.
From a technical standpoint, Avantgarde Acoustic's Opus 1's horn loading and 103dB/W/m high-sensitivity made it an ideal match for vacuum tube electronics, avoiding the common tradeoffs between efficiency and tonal warmth. The self-powered configuration simplified system integration and ensured the speakers performed exactly as intended. Cable choices and room treatments were modest but very effective, demonstrating that careful system setup and gear matching can produce glorious results.
As always, in the end what really matters is that you...
