In this manner the expression "stereophonic" applies to alleged "quadraphonic" and "encompass sound" frameworks and also the more regular two-channel, two-speaker frameworks. It is regularly appeared differently in relation to monophonic, or "mono" sound, where sound is heard as originating from one position, frequently focused in the sound field (practically equivalent to a visual field). In the 2000s, stereo sound is basic in diversion frameworks, for example, communicate radio and TV, recorded music and the silver screen.

The word stereophonic gets from the Greek "στερεός" (stereos), "firm, strong" + "φωνή" (phōnē), "sound, tone, voice" and it was begat in 1927 by Western Electric, by relationship with "stereoscopic".
