HIFIMAN HE400S Over Ear Full-Size Planar Magnetic Headphone

The HIFIMAN HE400S ($299) brings a lot of planar magnetic goodness to the table with a sound that is light years ahead of many of the consumer-grade headphones in this price bracket. Like the other HIFIMAN offerings, the HE400S manages to offer a midrange that is both sweet and resolving, along with some rock solid planar bass.

To my ears, the treble is pleasant and inoffensive, though not quite as detailed as some of HIFIMAN’s higher-end offerings. The HE400S also benefits from the improved ergonomics that were first introduced in HIFIMAN’s HE560 and HE400i. They are one of the highest efficiency planar phones in the world and will easily work with your digital audio player (DAP) or smartphone. Weighing a mere  350 grams, the innovative headband and specially designed ear pads provide long-term comfort so you may enjoy music for many hours. Planar magnetic headphones have conductive layers over almost all of the diaphragm and are said to result in significantly lower distortion than conventional dynamic headphones. The headband suspension system distributes the weight quite well too and can not stress this enough. Overall comfort is very, very good! – Dave Hanson
