Part 6: The Lower Level, Montreal, And Westmount Rooms
M5 Wynn Audio
His kiosks highlighted several of the very high end brands he carries: Krystal Kable, Entreq, Karan, and Borresen.
This Thiel turntable with pivoting arm, designed to keep the stylus perfectly aligned in the groove, was running with a special LP that returned the arm to a mid-point on the LP in perpetual play to demonstrate the action of the pivoting tonearm. It was very mesmerizing.
The Kalista Dream Play XC from France combines DAC, player, digital preamplifier, and streamer with its dual Elektra external power supply shown on the left. The Kalista is always a show-stopper, no matter which of its various functional incarnations is on display.
The Audio Group Denmark website tried to explain the lineup of the products in the four companies that comprise it. I picked up a brochure that helps sort it all out. Wynn always goes the extra mile to post prices of his systems, or in this case, a row of speakers on silent display. The new AXXESS line brings Audio Group Denmark's products to a more approachable price point.
Vimberg's Mino speakers sounded superb with this first rig featuring Vinnie Rossi amplification and a Metronome front end. The price list below fills in some details. Note the wood Entreq ground boxes on the top shelf and the floor behind the left monoblock.
The wooden Entreq Olympus Infinity T under the Metronome gear on the top shelf is a new form factor from Entreq that keeps the rig tidier while allowing use of shorter ground cables, without taking up additional floor space.
Børresen C2 speakers were also sounding superb in this Audio Group Denmark system, but there was a noticeable difference between the two systems in this room. In the past, I have occasionally found the wide separation and extreme toe-in of the Borresen speakers to be problematic, usually because of an unusually shaped room. Here, even with only one nearby side wall, having the speakers aimed such that they cross in front of the listener, the sound had excellent resolution. Wynn explained, for the benefit of Enjoy the Music.com scholars, that the extreme crossover helps eliminate distortion from side reflections, and the wide placement of the speakers generates a huge soundstage. In a smaller room, you would expect a narrower soundstage. When buying speakers in this price range, you should expect excellent delivery and setup service from your dealer — something that is a mainstay with Wynn Audio.
The fit and finish of this Børresen speaker was impeccable, and the contemporary design, coming from Denmark, is of the highest order.
The all-in-one integrated amp from Aavik Acoustics on the top shelf, combined with the Ansuz A3 Ethernet switch and D3 power distributor, makes for a compact system that could easily be less imposing on a smaller rack.
The contemporary design of the Aavik integrated amp begs to be seen, and the red LED lettering is easily read from across the room. The item on top is a sample of their uber-designed vibration-cancelling footers.
With cables, footers, and a rack added in, the price will climb north of $100k, but keeping within the Audio Group Denmark umbrella pretty much guarantees you will get the house sound you hear at the show.
