Lone Star Audio Fest 2025: The Pulse Of High-Fidelity
Joey G's Audio Channel also assembled a room for budget-minded audiophiles. Components used were Chesky Audio LC1 Bookshelf Monitors ($498), an Orchard Audio Starkrimson Stereo Ultra 2.5 amplifier ($2899.95), an Orchard Audio Pecan Pi+ Streamer ($1499.95), Argent Pur Monoblocks ($5900/pair), and a Lab 12 Pre 1 ($2,400). My hat goes off to Joey G for putting together such a noteworthy system with engaging sound.
J Porter Studios, another Austin company, was showcasing their Wellington Towers and brand new Waterloo Micros. The Waterloo Micros ($5,995) are monitors with a 1" ceramic tweeter, 6" ceramic midrange, and a rear-firing 9" glass fiber composite subwoofer. A surprising amount of sound emanated from those elegant boxes. The Wellington Towers ($19,985) are two-way active mass-loaded tri-amplified transmission lines and a beryllium tweeter paired with dual opposed 9" midrange/woofers. The pair on display was a stunning midnight blue. These babies produced a big, powerful sound that belied their size.
Van Zyl Audio, with whom I spent a lot of time last year at SWAF, had a room at the show. Their system consisted of Alpine Z-1 Midhorns ($18,000), a F-15 Horn-loaded subwoofer ($7,000), a Miller Audio Dyna-70 Ultimate Upgrade amplifier ($2950), and cables by Silversmith Audio. These speakers were an upgrade from the Alpine Mid-Horns I listened to last year, since the tweeter and mid-range driver were now horn-loaded. They still had the clarity I remembered from last year, but with an additional punch from the horns.
Paul Tracy's room had the beautiful Pure Art Fi LS-6 speakers on display. These speakers are a true marriage of art and technology. The LS-6 is a two-way design with a ribbon tweeter and custom-designed PTT6.5 woofers. The stands are integrated into the design. Paul also used the ubiquitous Dyna-70 amplifier. The LS-6s were smooth and musical and sounded much bigger than they looked.
Origin HIFI also had an upstairs room with Steinway Lyngdorf equipment. This room had their P100 2.1 Network Player/DSP ($17,400), and A1 Amplifier ($7,400). The two rooms that stood out at the show were the Sanduri Acoustics / Audio Mirror ballroom and the JWM Acoustics room. The marriage of the Sanduri Acoustics electronics and Audio Mirror speakers was a good one. Together, they effortlessly produced music that was clean and dynamic. The JWM Acoustics system demonstrated what was possible with an unobtrusive system in a smaller space. The amount of detail it revealed was humbling.
LSAF 2025 Was An Amazing Aural Experience!
