Welcome to Issue #87, another issue that
looks at a wide variety of equipment of different
shapes, sorts, and sizes. Not only are there
numerous reviews of equipment, but there is
also a pair of reports on equipment that was on
display at the recent Home Entertainment trade
show in New York City, with our own special
Ks, TK and GK, offering their perspectives on
the offerings.
Why This Issue Is A Bit Late: On the evening
of June 29, I was sitting in my office at church,
wrapping up a discussion of some issues. In the
back of my mind, I was already looking forward
to the weekend, when I was going to get in few
rounds of disc golf and then finish my work on
this issue. The next week would be a holiday
week, my son was coming home from the Air
Force, and I was looking forward to taking a few
days off and just having some fun. Suddenly I
felt a chill, as though the air conditioner had
kicked up a notch or two, and I excused myself
for a second to check the thermostat, which
seemed normal. I asked those in the office with
me whether they felt cold; they did not notice
any temperature difference. I sat back down to
wrap up the meeting and started shaking. A few
minutes later, I got in my car and drove home,
feeling lousy. The first thing I did when I arrived
home was check my temperature, which was
102. I thought I was coming down with the flu.
Strange...
As it turned out, I was actually coming down
with cellulitis in my right leg and groin. I had
never heard of this condition (an infection of the
inner layer of skin, probably from some sort of
strep bacteria), but now I was intimately
acquainted with it. I wound up spending 8.5
days in the hospital, then a week as an outpatient
driving to the hospital every six hours for more
IV antibiotics. Needless to say, I missed the
grand Ostrander 4th of July parade, I did not play
any disc golf, and I got nothing done on Issue
87. It has been as if three or four weeks of my
life were simply taken from me. Finally, I started
to get my strength back, and I finished my work
on this issue, several weeks behind schedule.
Next week will be my first week back on full-
time status at my job. July has been quite a
month!

One Last Thought: "If there is a g-d of recorded
sound, he guards his domain jealously. There seems
to be no perfect recording device, and no way of
completely capturing the magic of the concert hall."
