Reviewer's Bio

Chris Beeching

I blame my Father for sullying my life with audio and music. A keen amateur viola player, and audio lover, music was always being played at home, either live, or recorded. He also tainted my aesthetic by having the original Quad valve gear, which has retained a place in my audio heart ever since. Flawed it may be (in some respects) but it still makes music.

I graduated with an Honors Degree in music, with the organ being my main instrument. I then worked for EMI in London on the classical promotions side meeting many great performers and also spending a large amount of time in recording studios and at EMI-sponsored concerts.

I also became heavily involved with Jackdaws (as Company Secretary), a Music Education Charity based in Somerset, UK, founded to make music teaching of excellence available to those who might not otherwise be able to benefit from it. It now also boasts a prestigious Singing Competition, and has spawned a world premiere recording, and runs music holidays as well.

Career in writing started in about 1976, and since then has included Hi-Fi News, Jazz on CD, Audiophile, Classic CD, Listener, Hi-Fi World, plus a whole host of other odd bits and pieces here and there.

Four children make two lounges a necessity, giving me the peace and quiet to spend time with my music, (and as long as it's good music, that's fine by me) leaving the kids to do their thing in the other lounge. Current system is in the low-power-amp-high-efficiency-speaker arena, but also run a Naim system in the spare room. Still collecting records... and CDs occasionally. Music preference; classical and jazz, but no closed doors really!

I still play real music, and have raised funds for local charities by playing jazz gigs with my two brothers plus a few 'add-ons'.

My ultimate goal in life... to encourage many many more people to make time to really sit down and enjoy music.
